Knocker

Mr C found this among his mother's stuff when clearing out her house. It came from their old family home. The couple whose initials are shown are Mark Duncanson and Elizabeth Haliburton. From Melrose parish records we know they had a son Mark, on 15 September 1700, and that Mr Andrew Duncanson was minister of Bossils (St Boswells?) in 1656 and Maxton in 1660. We assume that Mark and Elizabeth moved to the house in 1709, and had this knocker either made or given as a gift. It is iron, made we presume by the local blacksmith. It was not on the door when Mr C lived there but our daughters remember using it in their 'playing house' games in the house cellar. We intend taking it back to the house with the hope it will pass from owner to owner with the house. The current owner is a doctor, so the initials MD are appropriate.
