Baby Jumping
This morning was a big sleep in after a long day yesterday.
Around lunchtime, we headed off with Rich's mum and sister to Barbate on the coast for a spot of lunch and bird watching.
The levante is blowing strong so the migrating birds including birds of prey and black and white storks are waiting for it to die down before being able to cross the Straits of Gibraltar. We saw loads yesterday hanging around and there were quite a lot about today. Not having been out here at this time if year before, it's quite exciting.
Before we went out I had a bit of a too many people crisis so took myself off with my camera and explored the top of the hill, finding lesser kestrels and this beautiful butterfly (still to identify). Now feeling much better after a bit of exercise and space.
Tonight, we've had a tapas dinner in the square which included pigs cheek - seriously delicious and bull's tail - which we were a little concerned might be swishing but was actually full of flavour and enjoyable.
On the way back up the hill, Gary was telling us about the strange fiestas they have including the greasy telegraph pole that people have to climb with a ham on top as the target prize, the fiesta of the green pepper, goat throwing out of the church (luckily now a toy) and best of all, the baby jumping competition. This is not a competition for babies but for adults who jump over as many babies as possible. I have not checked up on the accuracy of the information yet!
