Serpentine Woods
Today's the day ........................ for a woodland walk
I went for a walk today in this lovely place known as Serpentine Woods.
Formerly common grazing land, this part of Kendal Fell was gifted to the town in 1767 and planted with trees in 1790. In the depression of the 1820s, unemployment was high in Kendal and to provide labouring work, a group of subscribers had the woods set out as walks in 1824. Some years later, a summerhouse was built and sixpence was charged for its use for picnics and for admission to the walks.
From 1873 until World War II, a time gun in the woods was fired daily at one o'clock by remote control from a shop in Highgate, enabling the inhabitants of the town and surrounding countryside to check their clocks.
A bit like the Edinburgh one then .......................?
