parts of a root

I know what you're thinking, we felt like we were in seventh grade all over again while my friend presented the parts of the root to us in class. So funny. I don't know if I will be able to keep a straight face while presenting this to children. However, the root does play an important part in the function of the plant. There is plenty to learn about roots- but this drawing is just hilarious.

This is the dialogue I have...

The root is generally rounded. The root itself grows through the soil and there is a part of the root that grows. By growing, we mean that there are more cells being added, so this root will get longer and longer. This part of the root sitting in the soil is not moving, but there is this part on the front of the root that grows, that allows it to get longer an longer. It is located behind the root tip. The root tip has a cap. It is almost like it has a liittle hat on. This root tip is a tough structure because the root goes through the soil. This part will protect the growing part of the root.

The root has to grow because as the plant enlarges the roots have to go out to stabilize the plant. The root brings in the water. How does the root bring in water? Behind the growing part is the root tip. These cells are going to be the water extractors. One of the cells that is right behind here will send out little tubes that fill with water and the tubes withdraw itself within to the root itself. Each of these is called a root hair. They are very slender and are as long as they need to be.

So funny, right?!
