Cape Town (Day 3)
It was a 4am start today so we could get to the airport and check in at 5am. A bit of time in the lounge and then a 6:30am flight. Security was simple, no lifting liquids or electronics out of bags. We were flying with Kamula who had made their flight safety leaflet funny enough to bother reading.
We touched down at 8:30am and I briefly switched my phone on for the news of our future. No had won. No time to think of the consequences of this or what would be happening as people woke this morning back home as we were on holiday and there was more enjoyable things to do.
We arrived to a cool breeze and clear signs it had been raining. We decided to head straight to Table Mountain to see if the cable car was running but with a blanket of cloud over the top of the mountain, it didn't look hopeful. We pulled up, opened the doors and were battered by a chilling gale. The guy said it was 50/50 that they'd stop the cable car. It wasn't a hard choice to wait for a better day. We drove to Signal Hill to see if the sky would clear and we'd get a nice view; no such luck.
In the end we headed down to Camps Bay for a drizzly walk along the seafront to find food. As the heavens opened, we darted in to the nearest restaurant. It was 11:15am and they didn't open until 12 but they were happy to serve us anyhow. I had pizza (2 cent surcharge for removing the cheese for some odd reason) and this is when I fell in love with fresh, ripe, flavourful, creamy avocado! I hate avocado but this was something unlike the watery, flavourless things we get in the UK.
After lunch we checked in to the Hotel. Most places would sell the fact their room has sea views, not here in Cape Town. Our room came with views of the Mountain! The room was beautiful and with this view to wake up to, you really couldn't complain.
As the drizzle had been following us wherever we went, we decided to head to the mall at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Whilst inside, the sun came out. I was torn between shots for today but this one just won out over the tropical holiday shot.
We ate at the hotel and I took advantage of some time before dinner to soak in the indulgently large bath. The staff were all very friendly and had been hired for their sense of humour and good nature. They'd not long reopened though and there were some hiccups still to be ironed out. Johnny was in charge of customer happiness and we taught him some new Scottish meanings for words.
