Optimism

Taps aff in September and a Scotland flag - the most optimist man in Glasgow heads out. George Square (though I write this from the distance of several weeks and the sad foreknowledge of what is to come) was alive with bongo dancing grannies, old friends and yeah - some flag wavers, but nothing more than a football crowd would bring. When a friend asks me to hold his for a moment, I find it rests odd in my hands - I don't get it. Later at count party, as the broken-hearted open their celebratory whisky bottles in despair, I find the deflation troubling too. Confirmation bias on social media and elsewhere suggested we had a chance, but against the force feeding cathode ray tubes of the dominant status-quo - we didn't stand much chance. Inverclyde was close, and Glasgow, Dundee etc.. well, glad those happened, eventually I'll come to see that 45% was an incredible achievement - but like many, for now, the sadness is two fold. It's not just the loss, it's the shameless predictability of watching the other side renege on it's promises and get back to treating us like minions. We were powerful for a while..
