Dunes
Thursday 9th oct
Sanguinet
The coast line has a continuous sand dune * with an estimated height of 50 ft, when driving north we have yet to spot the Atlantic without walking up and over. There are paved walkways over with a vehicle height restriction of 2 mtrs. However there are a number of lakes along the way and last night we parked in an small Aire for CC. A pleasant area set amongst the trees next to Étang de Cazaux et de Sanguinet a large lake with sandy beaches. When walking along the area the bird life is minimal. One egret from a bed of reeds, a magpie, sparrows and gulls. Oh and three swans. When we first arrived to the area a couple days ago we headed for a loch hoping to bird watch. Nope. Dozens and dozens of decoy ducks and a few real coots.
*now at Arcachon and no dunes although this shot shows a very large dune
This time of the year there is no charge to camp here with a maximum of 10 CC. The whole area of this Atlantic coast caters for CC with car parks and Aires in abundance and quite pleasant with only a few people around, in the summer it must be busy, certainly an area of outdoor activities for families. I think our memory will be of the huge waves, acres of pine trees on sandy soil and long straight roads. The weather yesterday was warm and pleasant, very easy. BUT this morning we have rain, it started in the night with the forecast of continued rain today although it remains pleasantly warm.
This weekend it is the Tour of Mull car rally, we hope it isn't raining in Dervaig.
To put the record straight we are in a McDonalds and the coffee is very good. It must vary.
