Day Four - Dettifoss

Today, we made it to the waterfall! We didn't rush out this morning as we woke to the sound of heavy rain. After a leisurely breakfast, we decided to brave the weather and go to Illugastaðir, the home of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, who became famous as the last person executed in Iceland. There was nothing to see of any historical note, not that we found anyway, but there is a holiday home there now. We didn't know it, but we had the best of the weather there this morning!

We then headed for Dettifoss, which was a fair distance away, so as Graham was driving, I did the decent thing and nodded off ;o)

Dettifoss can only be reached down a secondary road... and they aren't kidding about it being secondary! Rough doesn't really cover it. the speed limit is 80kph, but you can't actually get anywhere near that speed. I now understand why "normal" cars aren't allowed on these roads. It was 25kms to Dettifoss down this road, and by the time we got there all our fillings had fallen out, the milk we'd bought earlier had turned to butter and all the trim had fallen off the car............

However bad the road though, it was worth the effort. The falls are stunning! It was still raining, and with the spray from the falls it was extremely wet, so the trip down to them was interesting to say the least.

To give an idea of the scale of them, Graham is standing next to the falls... he is the tiny dot to the left!

We then had another 30kms of this awful road to navigate before we got home, so we stopped en route at the Bistro in Reykjahlíð where I had traditional Icelandic fayre - Lamb soup. Blooming wonderful, and spot on considering how cold and wet we were.

We haven't decided where we're going tomorrow, as we're not sure of the weather. If today was anything to go by, we will be finding something to do INside!
