Day Five - Crater day.
It was freezing today. Bitterly cold, but the thermometer only said 4 degrees. I'm sure it was lying!
Since our apartment is right opposite the Pseudo Craters on Lake Myvatn, we decided to go and have a look. They aren't real craters, as you may guess from the name, but are formed when lava pours over wet ground and the water in the ground boils - the resulting steam forces its way to the surface, creating these craters in the process. I believe these ones date back 200 years, though I might be wrong. We walked round all of them, our walk taking just under 3 hours.
About half way round we were adopted by a lovely little dog who I swear was trying to rescue us as she kept coming up to us, and trying to get us to follow her back to the road. We didn't dare let on we didn't actually need rescuing but humoured her and let her lead us to safety (and the kettle!). It turns out she lives at the farm next door and loves tourists.
After we'd got some feeling back in our extremities we ventured out again and visited a nearby bird museum, which was interesting... Then we went and found a real crater which was substantially bigger than the pretend ones from this morning.
That was it for today, as we're both shattered. Namaskard tomorrow, and some geysers - and possibly lava fields if we have time.
