Lawyer's Wig
Last year I found puffballs but this time I could see none there. However I did find several groups of the Shaggy Ink Cap. Some looked like half opened umbrellas with a covering of scales while the older ones looked like this giving it the name of the Lawyer’s Wig. As it matures the gills beneath the cap turn black and secrete a black liquid filled with spores. This is starting to happen here with the lower part looking black and starting to dissolve into a black liquid. Nearby the only traces of some of the toadstools were inky markings on the ground. The liquid was once used as ink.
