Blue Monday
Continuing the theme from yesterday with yet another beautiful sunny autumn day on the Isle of Skye. We wound our way lazily around the north east of the island, stopping off regularly to take in the breathtaking scenery and eat our empire biscuits. Missed the turn off for this spot the first time past (think the locals might be trying to keep it to themselves) but eventually made it into the otherworldy spectacle of the Fairy Glen. Stories of fairies and fairy king's castles surround this geological spectacle, with the dozens of near perfect conical mounds that house the magical creatures scattered everywhere around the glen, some a few metres high, some tens of metres high and all distinctive from anything else in the nearby landscape.
The fairy king's castle, Castle Ewen, pictured here (I climbed up, he wasn't around) stands unique amongst the other natural structures and is a great vantage point to watch the Buzzards and Tornado GR4s fly past from.
We spent a good couple of hours just wandering around this magical place, with only a few other big people around (mostly lugging cameras and tripods. Like I was). I'm sure if Peter Jackson had known about this place before he headed off to New Zealand it would've made a perfect set for his Hobbits and saved a fortune in air fares.
Lots of pictures of other majestic lumps of rock, all against the same blue sky, were taken that will take a fair bit of sorting. At some point. But, for now, I'm taste-testing some of Skye Brewery's products that we (ok, I) stocked up on today.
Thanks for all the favourites and feedback on yesterday's - just checked back there (internet's a bit rationed around here just now) and hadn't noticed all the good vibes that had been sent out. Cheers!
