We are at the end of the bee keeping year. The honey has been removed and extracted. It is ready to be bottled when the need arises.

As you can see, all the hives have been strapped down to their stands.

If you look very carefully at the base of the two nearest hives you will be able to see a grey piece of metal with perforations in it.

This is called a mouse guard and it does exactly that.

The holes allow the bees to fly out at will but are small enough to prevent the ingress of mice. Mice can do a lot of damage if they get into a hive.

Not a lot of people know that....
