Just Hanging On

On my morning walk I spotted these at the edge of the field that homes my favourite tree (watch this space for the autumn colours – when they arrive . . . ).

Some roses are just hanging on to their blooms in spite of the weather, and even producing some optimistic buds. Is this a sign of something?
