Tyne Cot

Tyne Cot simply took my breath away. The symmetry and startling white gravestones with an autumnal back drop created such a peaceful place. It was in stark contrast to the German cemetry, where all the gravestones were flat and black and there seemed to be very little light coming in through the trees.

Even with parties of schoolchildren everywhere, they all showed the utmost respect for their surroundings. It is the graveyard for the 11,954 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in Ypres, of which 8,367 are unnamed.

It is difficult to comprehend the amount of lives lost, and very young lives at that.
