Bamburgh Beach

Today was lovely and warm and we made the most of it by having a very busy day! We drove to Etal after breakfast, parked the cars there and caught the narrow-gauge railway to Heatherslaw. Once there, we had lunch in the tearoom then looked around the working water mill. I was explaining how it worked to Orla when the miller came up and asked her if she would like to turn the water wheel off and on. She explained that the mill is run by two women and they mill flour and barley. Orla was delighted by the fact that she operated the wheel. She also got to work a joist that lifted a sack of flour up through a hatch door in the floor above us! We had to rush back to the station for our train so I didn't get a chance to buy any flour, more's the pity.

Here's a video of a very animated Conor watching the toy trains at Heatherslaw.

Once back at Etal we decided not to go round the castle there but go back to Bamburgh and spend some time on the beach. So glad we did, as it was lovely and we all had a lot of fun. Conor gave us all gifts of seaweed and made sand angels. Orla and I laid treasure hunts for each other. Conor found a bit of driftwood and pretended it was a mouth organ. Simple pleasures!

Here's a video of the fun on the beach at Bamburgh.
