Crossraguel Abbey

The ruined abbey of St. Mary of Crossraguel sits beside the main road south of Maybole, South Ayrshire. It was founded by Duncan the Earl of Carrick around 1244, after he donated money to the monks of Paisley to build an abbey in this place.
The name of the abbey relates to an ancient cross which stood nearby, the cross of Riaghail, and may mean abbey of the royal (regal) cross.
