Halloween

We attended a school event for the parents and teachers only - very kindly hosted at one of the teacher's homes. Her family home was decorated extensively ready for Halloween! It's a very popular event in our area with a lot of houses going all out with decorations. There are some done tastefully (like our teacher's) and some done to cause horror and distaste. This was the appetizer table (before food) at our event and it was done to wow and awe without making me run away screaming! At least until one of the Dad's hid plastic spiders inside some of the bowls!!
Do you celebrate Halloween?
I like the chance for kids and their families (if they choose) to dress up and be different for a few hours. I like the chance to meet the neighbors. I like the fun and the laughter and the humor. I do not like to be scared. I don't like the houses near us who decorate with hanging people, gory body parts strewn across the lawn, zombies, threatening knives and vicious bloody weaponry. I don't find fun in that. I find myself wanting to shield my eyes never mind my daughter's. I find myself explaining what a zombie is, what a ghost is or apparently a "hell spirit" is the latest set of words to somehow slip into my niece's school vocabulary!
I understand that many like the fear factor. I just wish they chose to display it inside and shared it with chosen interested friends without the need to share it with the whole community. If we were an adult only area then that would be up to us to look or look away but I feel very concerned about how many kids see it and don't ask their parents to explain or where the parents don't explain for whatever reason.
You can say I'm too sensitive but keep it to yourself!!! :)
