Bunny day
Today was the national campaign Jumpstart Reading for the Record event. Schools, nurseries, libraries and more across the USA were reading the same book "Bunny Cakes" by Rosemary Wells. Our preschool read it during their library time and my daughter and I had made bunny biscuits for snack time afterwards. Some became a bit injured en route / lost ears, eyes or noses. However enough survived to give every kid a whole bunny!
I was really delighted by the kids enjoyment of the story. More than that I loved that the teachers put their all into this today! The librarian read the story and acted it out. She donned an apron, she had pretend food to add to the mix in order, she wrote the words as Ruby and then as Max wrote them to show the kids, and then she revealed a cake!
The teachers in the classrooms had a "grocery list" area for kids to write their own grocery list, a grocery store are complete with pretend scanners, keyboards and products to purchase with the pretend money, the kitchen area had aprons, bowls, pretend food, spoons for stirring. The kids all had a complete blast and in general shared well and understood what was going on. It was wonderful and I felt so glad and honored to be a part of it.
We had a record 37 people at our first event (including teachers and parent) and then the librarian did it all over again with the 2nd grade so we have an extra 14 to add to help break the world record for reading the same book on the same day.
I love reading. I really hope my daughter continues to love it and cannot think that she would manage to miss it with our home reading and the support of this wonderful school.
