Bag-rithmetic
Problem.
In her kitchen cupboard, Mrs Blogs has 40 single use plastic carriers. In his hall cupboard Mr Blogs has 5 plastic bags-for-life. In the boot of their car the Blogs have 8 posh shopping bags and 2 plastic bags for life.
Without using your calculator, answer the following:
When Mr&Mrs Blogs pop in to the wonderful H&M store and buy clothing items they did not expect to purchase on that day, how many bags of any kind will they actually have with them in the shop? Add the number of bags the assistant will have to sell them. Add the total to the sub total of bags they already had.
At least H&M (sister of the more pricey Cos) has a long-established sustainability policy. However, I heard several 'poly bag' conversations this morning, all along the lines of "I don't mind paying. It's for a good cause" which entirely misses the point and may not be accurate! The proceeds belong to individual retailers who may ... like the big boys.... publicise their donations, or may lump the cash in with their takings! (Thus spake a Radio Scotland expert yesterday, quoting from the official documentation)
