A Prisoner's Grave
A short walk this morning in thick fog around Princetown with the walk and talk group. The gravestones you can see here are for prisoners from the nearby Dartmoor Prison. The stones show their initials only and their date of death. In those days they were not worthy enough to have their full name engraved on the stone. These stones have dates on them from about 1900 to 1950. Prior to that they were buried in unmarked graves. One of the other photos on flickr shows the extent of these marked graves. In total over 600 prisoners have been buried here since the prison opened in 1809 - nearly all of them in unmarked graves.
