The Poppies .........
.......... at The Tower of London to commemorate the start of WWI in 1914.
A poppy will be placed for every one of the 888, 246 British fatalities in that conflict.
Much more information here.
The last poppy will be placed on Armistice Day, November 11th 2014.
I know that these have been blipped many times already and that this is the classic view but using a wide angle lens gives it so much more impact. (If you are reading this, Matt, this would not have been possible without your gift of that lens last year - thank you (again) so much). They do go almost all the way around the Tower but this is the largest expanse that I could get in one shot.
Impossible to Count ........
I was up at 05.00 this morning, onto the Docklands Light Railway to Tower Gateway, walked onto Tower Bridge and caught some shots of the sky as the sun rose over the River Thames and then walked all the way around the poppy installation - I took over 400 shots in the space of an hour and a half - this one was taken at 07.10. When I left to go back to the hotel for breakfast there were already quite a lot of people taking pictures and just looking - I cannot imagine how many would have been there by mid-morning - getting up so early was more than worth it.
This shot is for everyone but especially for S - my lovely friend in New York State who specifically wanted to see them today.
If you get the chance - go and view this wonderful exhibition - I don't have enough superlatives to describe it.
