sharing breakfast?

a loon and a seal. together. really?

this morning i headed to my favorite cove. it was a beautiful blue sky/white cloud day. i was focusing on horizon island shots (nothing new there), when a loon popped up. we proceeded to play the "where will you pop up next and will i have time to focus" game. he spent a lot of time underwater. i knew the fishing must be good.

i have tried for a loon shot for quite some time. i was hoping i might get it today. i did not expect what happened next. the loon popped up, settled, and then right beside the loon, a seal rose up out of the water, arched, took a breath and went back down. the loon, unfazed, followed him down. the seal jumped out of the water again. the loon popped up and went back down. neither seemed to mind the other's company. they fished within feet of each other for quite some time. there must have been one delicious school of fish down there.

after about ten minutes (it seemed like forever), the seal disappeared and the loon floated out to sea. i looked at the shots on my camera and yes, this really did happen. this is not the best picture, but i wanted to post it. it was too great a moment not to share.

has anyone else seen a loon and a seal fish together? i'm curious.
