Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Quietly rotting away.

A cold, but bright day; just the day for a spot more fungal foraging at Haddo House. Most of the big showy mushrooms are now past their best but there was a fine crop of various waxcaps on the formal lawns in front of the mansion.

In the woods, the saprotrophic species were busy doing their stuff recycling dead and dying wood. Among them, this little beauty, the fruiting body of the purple jellydisc fungus Ascocoryne sarcoides, growing on the saw-cut surface of a felled tree.
