Newton Cap Viaduct, Bishop Auckland Co Durham.

Spent a few days back in the town where our kids grew up. The viaduct which is a grade 11 listed building was built in 1857 to carry both passengers and coal from all the surrounding mining areas down to Durham City and on to the coastal docks. In 1968, Mr Beeching in his wisdom shut the railway and the viaduct fell into disuse and was threatened with demolition. It was always the dominant structure in the area and a campaign was launched to save it and it was eventually converted into a two lane road road.
