People at an Exhibition
Biked it over to Stirling University today for what turned out a photographically rewarding evening.
First there was a very good lecture from one of The Guardian's photographers, Graeme Robertson, a local lad that has photographed his way around the world and built up a diverse portfolio of images. He showed and spoke about some of his harder-hitting work from conflict zones he's visited over the past twenty years and then balanced that out with some stunning portraits, ranging from some of British politic's most famous rogues to the likes of Denis Law and George Best (thoroughly pissed at the time of the photograph apparently).
It was then the turn of some of our students to be presented with their prizes after a good haul in the University's Annual Photography competition, and a chance to mingle and look at all the shortlisted entries.
One of the interesting things that Graeme mentioned when advising how best to get started in a photographic career was how he, and his employers, when sent portfolios, wouldn't even look through the majority of them unless the subject of the shots were people. Trees, hills, leaves and your pet rabbit just wouldn't cut it.
So, there you go. People.
