Poland: Toruń town walls and river Vistula
We have traveled here for the day by train from Poznan. Ideally, we would have incorporated a stop in Gniezno in our schedule, but the paucity of trains on the Poznań-Toruń line made this impossible.
The town was founded by two Teutonic Knights in 1243. It was undamaged during World War II and today still retains almost the entirety of its medieval layout. Toruń is one of the "Seven (Cultural) Wonders of Poland". It it was placed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1997.
The town has several major museums including a fascinating historical museum with an attached small "Skansen" (open air museum).
Toruń is home to the Nicolaus Copernicus University - not surprisingly, since the astromomer was born there.
