The Stromness Boat

As announced on Radio Orkney this morning, there were ‘technical problems’ with the Graemsay this morning so the crossings between Stromness and Hoy have been restricted. Therefore it was essential for these workers to get the last boat home. They are waiting for the bairns from Stromness Academy to disembark before getting on. It was really low water this afternoon. The kitchen lights have been on all day in the Hoy Post Office. Houton Head is floating grimly in the background.

CMC has just announced that tonight’s visiting has been postponed in favour of a night in, in front of the stove, her knitting pins clicking and the only other sound is the malt gently lapping into my glass. Mentioning low water reminds me..........
