Jay bird

Sorry for the bad quality but the lighting has been really poor today but I really wanted to record the jay as I have nt seen one here until this last week. As you can see it has an acorn in it's mouth and has been flying too and fro picking them off the branches. It then flies off and must be caching them somewhere to return when food is scarce. One single bird can hide over several thousand acorns some of which will grow into oak trees and they play an important part in spreading oak woodlands.
They are very colourful and have a distinctive call and flight pattern. If attacked by a hawk they will mimic the hawks call as an alarm and also mob the attacking bird.

Just by coincidence Jay James was voted out of the x-factor tonight.
