Tour of the High Peak District

We decided to take a picnic with us and set out about 12 noon and went to Ladybower Reservoir where we sat and ate our lunch. It was cold and damp, but we sat in the car. The sun was breaking through at times and shining on the water, which was pretty as you can see above.

We then drove on up through the High Peak District towards Glossop. Stuart stopped the car and Paul and I got out to take photos. We must have been very high up as the wind was frigid - it felt a good ten degrees colder! So we only stayed out for a few minutes and marvelled that walkers and cyclists brave the elements up there! There was a long descent into Glossop and we headed for a car park in a parkland area in the hope of finding a loo. A couple of dog walkers pointed us up the hill to the loo, so we had a nice walk through the autumnal park. There was a fast flowing narrow river at the bottom of the park, adjacent to the lower car park, which was only a few inches from overtopping. We saw a few local residents looking at it with some surprise. I took a movie of it.

After this, we drove on towards Chapel-en-le-Frith, as Stuart had the idea that we could take the scenic route back to Castleton. There was a terrific hill out of Glossop and we were stuck behind a bus which was impossible to overtake, but it did mean we had an excuse to have a better look around as the scenery was pretty stunning. We turned off and went down various little roads which Stuart eventually declared to be too narrow and dodgy (I ribbed him a bit about this!) and we went back to the main road and turned off onto a better road which led through the hills and eventually through a gorge past the Peak Caverns and back to Castleton.

Paul began to feel unwell and so we went straight home and got back about 3 pm. The weather was going very misty when we got back home, so I think we had the best of the day anyway.
