Rooftop

The cottages in our village are quite pretty, mostly red brick, black and white or tile hing, with clay tile roofs. Many now have their ground floor converted to retail. But it pays to look up to see what is above. Rows of chimneys remain fromwhen every room had a coal fire. The ornate lamp is one that was put in the village to smarten it up, at the same time as brick pavements. The most interesting part of this roof is the little griffin on the gable who looks down on the busy cross roads, watching the unique traffic arrangement.
At this cross roads we have a squareabout! It is a raised square table, a four way traffic calming obstacle. We have tried all sorts of of variations but this one which requires people to give way to traffic approaching from the right, seems to work, most of the time. Sometimes people get excessively polite and an "after you" system prevails. At other times people shoot across without regard for anyone else. And the griffin presides over all.
