A killing spree

A lovely day today. Lots of sunshine and no wind. People were out walking, making the most of a fine weekend. In the afternoon I set off down our track. The sun was low in the sky, creating a glow in some places and long shadows in others. I liked what the light was doing in this picture, but it also shows one of the ancient trees, so old that the wall was built around it and it has over the years gradually pushed the stones away.

As I turned to go back I heard a vehicle trundling over the track. For the next few minutes, I had to get into a gateway to let 15 trucks and 4x4s make their very slow way past – a shooting party. One driver had the audacity to wind down his window and say to me: “You’ve met rush hour.” I was speechless – perhaps as well!

On they went, breaking up the track even more than it has already been broken up, churning up the muddy sections and forcing walkers and children and dogs up onto the banking. In each vehicle there were at least four men with their guns. No doubt they were feeling very smug at their cleverness in killing birds. I suppose they thought it was fun; a good way to spend a sunny afternoon.

There are some things in this life that I really don’t understand!!
