The Haer Stane
This massive lump of rock sits here in Tullibody's War Memorial and has done so for probably the last 10,000 years when it was left here as the last ice age retreated.
It's mentioned that the stone formed the centre of a Druid's stone circle dating back to around 800AD but as far as I can tell there's no actual archaeological evidence of this.
A 10 foot granite stone carved with a Celtic design, a replica of Kenneth McAlpin's 'stannin stane' which used to stand nearby, is plugged into the top of the 8 foot tall rock to serve as the centrepiece of the war memorial. It commemorates the 27 local men who were killed in World War I.
As a kid I remembering visiting this regularly and seeing all this sitting in the centre of a pond, which was drained a long time ago, and playing hide and seek in amongst the hundreds of different trees and bushes around the memorial park.
Considering this site is listed officially as an Ancient monument it's sadly neglected nowadays with the memorial park used mostly as an alfresco bar if the number of empty lager cans and smashed bottles is anything to go by. Shame really.
