Diffraction

The star effects on the bulbs were created by light diffraction within the mechanics of my camera. I shot this photo at an aperture of f/14 - and a narrower aperture (e.g. f/16 or f/22) would have resulted in more pronounced effects. The narrow aperture had been used to counterbalance the slow shutter speed (4 seconds) needed to track the light trails of cars moving through the image.

I had previously heard of the effect, but had not knowingly generated it before. The availability of Christmas illuminations now suggests that I experiment with taking some more narrow aperture shots.


It's full moon tonight, so photographers are in evidence!
