body snatchers!

Visited Logierait Churchyard today with Bill.

It was founded by St Cedd in 650AD

What a wonderful final resting place it would make. The river Tay bordering on one side, and hills all around. Today the sun was shining and the birds were singing their heads off!
Within the walled enclosure you can see three examples of iron mort safes, (two full size and the third is for a child). They are heavy cast iron coffin covers which were used around 1828 to prevent body snatchers from removing newly buried bodies to sell in Edinburgh for medical examination.
The mortsafes were lowered on to the coffin and removed some time later once the corpse was considered of no use for resale.
They reminded me of something out of an Edgar Allen Poe movie!!

There is a stone built into the Church wall which commemorates Alexander MacKenzie, the first liberal Prime Minister of Canada who was born in Logierait Perthshire in 1822.
