Lava Fields
The Big Island of Hawaii is covered with lava fields. Some of them are preserved just as they were when they became solid many years ago. This is one of those areas. The grass seems to be hardy enough to survive on the lava bed I used for my blip for today. I was so fascinated by how much of the area still looks like this. We were on this island about 20 years ago and this looks the same.
We drove off the main road through a completely untouched area..even the road was what they called "unimproved"....that is an understatement! We had to drive very slowly toward the ocean beach promised on the sign for this Hawaii State Park. Once we were on this mass of pot holes there was NO place to turn around....but we made it there and back without any problems. On the way there, hubby didn't even see the beautiful of the lava swirls and large lava tubes. He was too worried we would get a flat tire or something. The beach area was beautiful and after a time to relax, he was able to see the beauty of it all on the drive back!!
We also explored other beaches and snorkeling spots north of Kona. We happened on a neighborhood road and took one of the "beach access" paths and found the sweetest clear water protected area to snorkel. It was more like a HUGE tide pool in the lava rock....it had a narrow ocean opening where fresh ocean water continued to wash in and out. There were about 5 turtles in it, along with many of the same fish we saw yesterday. Beautiful and clear! BUT people on shore had told us to be careful because there were a lot of dangerous sea urchin in there. We almost didn't go in, but I am glad we did. I did see a few of the urchins we needed to avoid, but we were careful and LUCKY because we didn't touch any of them. Every time I accidentally touched something, I did freak out a little. It was kind of shallow in some spots, so when I followed something into one of those area, I backed out quickly.....and carefully. Hubby didn't stay in long, so he enjoyed laughing at me when I was circling some coral following a fish or turtle....or when I got to the shallow areas and went in reverse. There was a lady who was sitting on shore in front of her house.....hubby and her were great friends by the time I got out. :))))
I could have blipped the sunset, flowers, palm trees on the ocean beach, more fish or turtles, or a really cool shore bird. Oh dear, what will I do when I get home and have to go searching for some silly blip for the day?
