Big girl/Little girl
You need to see my blip of the 18/03/2010 for reference to title.
Went to the Teul Sleng Museum today. This was where Pol Pot's security forces took over a high school, and from the outside it still looks just like one, and turned it into the largest centre of detention and torture in the country.I found it one of the most harrowing places that I have ever been. To begin with I couldn't take any photo's and then I did but it just didn't seem right for me to blip them even though I do think that the more people that are aware of such atrocities the less likely they are to be repeated.
Perhaps it is because I have lived through the whole period with only limited awareness, it is much easier to theorise tragedy when it is in the past, who knows.
It is made all the more poignant that the perpetrators of these crimes are only just facing prosecution in Phenom Penh, with Duch, the senior figure at S21, being the first to face justice.
Anyway I felt more comfortable blipping Jessie on our way down to the Killing Fields, strangely a positively serene place in comparison.
(we did see a Buddhist Monk smoking here, I'm sure that's not allowed)
If anyone is in this city in the future I do recommended this place as very worthy of a visit.
Hopefully more cheerful day tomorrow.
PS the reason that there are so many Tuk Tuk and traffic blips is that we go everywhere on these things- too hot to walk and best not to look at driving! :)
