AE Housman wrote 'On Wenlock Edge the wood's in trouble' and goes on to describe the wind moaning in these very trees and to reflect on the centuries during which this limestone escarpment has been here in Herefordshire. It is impossible to avoid a frisson of the passage of time when standing here and thinking of his line which says 'A Roman then it was, now I'..... At least we can take photos on our iPhones!
