Gushet 2 - Glasgow Savings Bank Building
This one now stands marooned on the north side of Garnethill, at the point where Shamrock Street and New City Road meet. New City Road was the start of Great Western Road: the stretch between Garscube Road and St George's Cross. It's almost completely buried under the motorway now.
Again there are family connections for me here, albeit much fainter. Distant ancestors on my father's side came from this area, from a street called Burnside Street which ran parallel to the NC Road, just to the north. Roughly where the M8 flyovers are now.
This building was completed around 1906. The architect was a Neil C Duff.
Trivia for the day: the site currently occupied by Chinatown (just to the right of this image) was, in the 1900s, a zoo!
Another gushet tomorrow.
