Gammon Iron and Bitts
To continue the parts of a boat theme........
The gammon iron (actually bronze again and shaped like a hoop with a hook on the side) goes over the bowsprit and keeps it in position over the stem of the boat. This used to be done with a rope lashing known as gammoning, hence gammon iron when rope was replaced by metal.
The Bitts are the two lugs the inboard end of the bowsprit goes between, on big boats they are massive baulks of timber sticking out of the deck but Saffwy is very light so these little lugs have a metal bar through them to locate the inboard end of the bowsprit.
The hook is for the anchor cable to run over to keep it at the bow of the boat.
It was commented that the words are very odd and where did they come from?
Like most things, everything has a name - on houses we have soffits, fascias, transoms, mullions and so on, Cars have dashboards, scuttles and bonnets.
