Mosaic

A few barrios away from our house across the river is a small park enlivened by the most gorgeous pieces of art I´ve admired for a while. Like a giant come to live out of some legend erupts a bronze iron figure from the icy summit morphed straight out of the pavement bricks. Mount Chimborazo or Cotopaxi in miniature. The figure is strong, animated and icy eyed with a hammer in hand burst forth in a frenzy of....creativity?

Perhaps so, and judging by the mosaic of color the whole sculpture is made from I would say most definitely. Leaning down close to examine the tile works animating this miniature volcano rising from the street are infinite pieces of art. Small colorful tiles of all shapes, sizes, and colors adorned with all manner of visages. Each one a small ceramic fresco, likely done by the local school children. The kaleidoscope of color is both beautiful and intriguing like that, offering glimpses of the character and aspirations of those who made them.

This is a small collection of some of my favorites, a mosaic of a mosaic. Now quick, can you find the continent of Africa, the lovers embrace, and the ace of hearts? Everything from elephant seals to white rabbits. Automobiles to nudes, and Medusas to armadillos....
