Long Slow Distance

Majk monsatery, Hungary

My first day in Hungary with my drágám Ildi was spent on a memorable visit to the Camaldulian monastery in Majk (pronounced as an Irishman would say "Mike"). Located about 70km west of Budapest, in Komárom-Esztergom county the monastery was founded in 1733 by a holy order of Italian origin.

The monks, who undertook a vow of silence, lived in separate cells, which were actually very spacious private dwellings with attached gardens, where they grew herbs.

Please see this website for details of the monastery Majk monastery

There were many more wonderful images I could have blipped in this location, but I will upload them as extras...

The photo shows the steeple, all that remains of the original church. Also missing is the steeple's distinctive onion dome.

You can see some more images of the monastery at Majk more
