Race Day!

I did it! The culmination of 12 weeks of training, the race was, in a word, amazing.

I would even venture to say that it was a life changing experience for me. When I set out to do this I wasn't sure if I would stick with it or if I was strong enough to complete it. I proved to myself during this experience that I am physically AND mentally strong- that I am capable of a lot.

Today, the first four miles were a breeze. I ran with a friend that was doing the full marathon until our courses split and we had to go our own way. Mile five included a gradual uphill climb, I walked about a minute and then ran a steady pace until mile 10. At mile 10 I hit a mental road block. During training this was the fartherest I had gone on my own so I felt worried that I wouldn't be able to make the last 3 miles. I stopped to walk about five minutes. Like a vision, suddenly I came upon a bunch of volunteers handing out Otter Pops. So. Good. I was able to pick up the pace again.

Mile 12 was gruling and by mile 13 all I wanted was it to be done. The last .1 miles, however, was magical. There were hundreds of spectators at the finish line, everyone was cheering and yelling positve things. There was music and cheerleaders. I ran across the finish line and almost cried. I was overcome
with emotion... Pride in my accomplishment, happy that it was over... Physically I was exhausted...

And now I can't wait to get back out there and do it again!!
