Waters
Instead of slowly making our way to the big 40th anniversary Glasto special; I spent the night on the maternity ward. A routine appointment led to a doctor doing a thorough examination and telling me that my waters had broken at 25+4.
Panic stations.
Within the hour I had this horrid thing in my hand and two lots of meds ready - steroids to prepare Pob's lungs for birth, and insulin to help with the high sugar count that the steroids would give. We were ushered away to a private room and told lots of different things about what would happen next. They would give me 4 lots of steroids over 48 hours to mature the lungs, then transfer to another hospital that could care for such a small Pob. We were also told that if I started to contract, I could be given other drugs to delay things.
I don't think we had ever been so frightened.
However; a scan showed that there was lots of fluid around the baby (more than average) and it was very doubtful that the water had come from there. The scan also showed that Pob was a very happy and comfortable breach baby, 2 pounds 1 ounce with a strong heartbeat. Phew.
Many consultations lalter , it was decided that the fluid may have been my 'back waters', another area of fluid that can be released with no real consequences. I was in for around 24 hours, looked after very well and reassured that Pob was showing no signs of escape.
It was a very hard night for Paul and I, but I'm pleased to report that all seems to be fine and we will hopefully go another ten weeks (I will be probably be induced at 37 weeks if all goes to plan).
It feels good to be home, and even better to know that the Poblet is safe.
