Summer solstice

The sun stayed out with nary a wispy cloud in the sky for hours on end today. It was the summer solstice where the axial tilt of the Earth at this latitude just North of the 45th parallel is most inclined towards its maximum. In other words it is high summer along the Great Lakes.

Traditionally the solstice has been celebrated by many cultures, including the famous druids and celts with holidays, festivals, and celebrations of fertility and bounty. It has always been a time for gathering.

In that spirit I gathered round with friends by the lake for the long waning stretch of the sun into twilight on this longest day of the year. Steph, Alison, Nate, and good ol Jim LeMoine kept company lazing on hammocks and sitting along the shore sipping on red wine and listening to the loons call late into the day.

When the sky finally faded into darkness it was after 10:30 in the pm and the stars were just beginning to twinkle over the ripples of the lake.

Happy Solstice!
