St Peter's Church

Bit of rain this morning which was bad news / good news. Bad news because we were planning on going to Minsmere, but with further rain forecast there we decided to stay at home. Good news because the rain brought with it some interesting cloud formations. So packed up the camera and tripod and cycled off to see what I could come up with.

Came back with lots of shots, shooting in jpeg & raw for the first time. Then the rest of the day I've been playing with Photomatix in search of the dramatic skies, but whenever I achieved the sky I wanted the remainder of the picture had lost quality. So absolutely nothing I'd be happy to publish - haven't investigated raw as yet - in that loads of people have told me I need to start shooting in raw I hope that these investigations prove more productive.

So today's blip is a jpeg snap of St Peter's Church - straight out of the camera, and not too bad for that.

For those with a historical bent, the Church building dates back to Saxon times. The first Saxon invaders called themselves "The Sons of Tew". ("Tew" being the Saxon for the God of war). When the Saxons were converted to Christianity in the early 7th century under Mellitus, Bishop of East Anglia, their heathen shrines were converted for Christian worship. The North wall of the present Church was Saxon and restored in Norman times. This restoration took place in or about the year of the Domesday book, 1086 AD, when the nave and chancel were built by Peter de Valoignes, Norman Sheriff of Hertford Castle.
