Opposite of Me

I once had a friend who completely disappeared.

He met a girl, you see, and, having suffered through the whole dating thing for far too long, decided in short order that she had to be The One.

That in mind, he set out to be and do anything he could to make her happy.

Now my friend, he was a bit of a downer - cynical, pessimistic type. But the girl - she was not.

More of a light bulb, she was - walk-into-a-room-and-light-the-whole-place-up kind of person. Positively glowed most of the time.

And she didn't really like his sort of Heathcliff-y, dark-and-broodingness, so she set out to cure him. Decided what he really needed was a bit of light to brighten all those dark corners.

And he naturally agreed, offering himself quite eagerly on the altar of The One's self-improvement regime.

So off they went - flower shows, kiddie playgrounds, happy, happy, joy, joy - turn that bulb to 2000 Watts and wash that frown away.

He bathed in her sunlight until it permeated every fibre of his being, until he was, indeed, a new man.

Which was the problem.

Once the dark had lifted and the shadows were all chased away, there was nothing left of him.

After a year or so, she decided he wasn't "the man she fell in love with anymore," and she left him, too.

Check out Arrakis Native's great bike shot and list of Not's. Some nifty poetry on some of his older ones, as well.
