years in the unmaking

The flat had this built-in-wardrobe thing in a corner of the room when we bought it. It was reasonably well-finished and properly plastered and everything so we thought it would be quite hassly to remove it (though didn't find out how hard to remove it was going to be until we started poking around inside it) and instead built (or rather had built, though Nicky's dad jumped in and did it when I was off doing something else so it was thereafter neither my fault nor responsibility) a larger wardrobe around it. Due to the poor construction of the outer wardrobe it was much simpler to remove but the inner has remained in some form until now, though due to the resumption of the leak from the woman upstairs recently I'd left the last bit in place to give us somewhere to put a large plastic tub to catch the drips. After she finally got her arse in gear and properly fixed it it's been clear for several weeks and is now safe for the damage to be repaired and the room replastered. After that it should just be the tedious matter of fitting a couple of skirting-boards and cleaning dust out of the doorbell from the last time the plasterer came before the flat is ready to rent out.

EDIT: A small bit of scrunched-up newspaper noticed in the small pile of rubble generated during today's deconstruction when it was bagged and binned on Monday 12th indicated that this might have been built as late as 1995, at which time I was living nearby and frequently walking past the door. If only I'd known that one day I would have lived here I might have visited and attempted to persuade them to either build it thrice the size or not at all.
