Apostle Islands

Today we left Minnesota passing through Duluth into Wisconsin around the lake. We didn't have time to stop in Duluth, but you know it looked like a pretty awesome place. Who knew?

Instead we were holding out for making it to the Apostle Islands. A gorgeous string of islands just off Wisconsin's northern tip jutting out into Lake Superior. It was a warm day and come lunch we pulled over for a picnic in the town of Cornucopia Wisconsin, thats right folks. Small town Americana all the way. We have entered the land of cheese and bratwursts. American's dairyland little roadside billboards say...

In this Northern corner of Wisconsin though there is more forest woodland than fields. Many of the lands here belong to the Red Cliff First Nation up to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Past these green highways lies the vacation town of Bayfield and the gateway to many of the Apostle Islands. It came as a bit of a shock to see what most peoples ideas of camping are pulling into Bayfield. RV's, electricity outlets, bathrooms, you name it....

....so we found a nice rustic spot for the night on the local reservation. None of those things and nobody else around. Just a few open camp spots in the trees on a bluff over a boulder strewn shoreline of Superior below. There were patches of raspberry, beach pea, and saint john's wart growing wild all around the campsite.

We spent the evening reading on the beach and swimming out into the cold waters of Superior. Come sunset we climbed up on a big rock to cook dinner and sip on red wine watching the sun gasp over the horizon.
