Kununurra to Purnululu NP
Woken by J telling me he had a dream that I was having an affair with some rapper called Chitty Bang.
Never heard of him.
Must be getting out of touch.
Off for an early morning run.
Pretty by the lake.
Sun already out though and glaringly hot, making the run pretty uncomfortable.
Decide on an extended taper before my race in a couple of weeks rather than punishing myself on our holiday.
Pack up and head off for the day.
Scenic highway drive.
Ranges of red rock and lots of trees.
Lots more trees than I anticipated actually.
Was picturing big open treeless spaces.
Wallaby crossing the road was the first mammal sighting for the trip.
Reached the boundary of Purnululu National Park (AKA The Bungle Bungle).
53km of rough road to get into the park.
Slow going.
First river crossing.
Beautiful though, and we make a few photos stops.
There are queues at the visitor centre to pay park and camping fees.
Keen to see the park from the air, we were lucky there was a flight available this afternoon.
Straight down to the airfield.
The sky clouds over as we drive down there.
Storm coming in from Kununurra, apparently.
Not quite here yet though, and we are able to take off for my first chopper flight.
Thirty minutes over some pretty spectacular rock formations.
High peaks, deep gorges, rings of red and grey in the rock.
Our pilot tells us of the Aboriginal legends about how the Bungles were formed.
Apparently the beehive-type formations pictured here were formed when, after a fight with a galah, the echidna buried himself under ground and pushed up all the rock.
Long quills - some of the rocks are 250m high!
So spectacular, I wasn't even fussed that we were hanging out of a machine without doors, held in only by a seatbelt high in the air...
Pretty cool.
Drove to Walardi Camp for the evening.
Scored the last spare camp site.
Set up tents.
Delicious lamb korma and the last beer for tea.
Food-wise, definitely glamping* compared with how we usually do it!
