today i shot entirely in shadows and found that i really liked it.
typically portraits rely heavily on facial expression or a concrete form; understandably so, because appearance defines so much of the subject's character and the photographer's purpose with each photo.
what i like about shadows (and reflections) is that you have to rely on other things. you have to use all of your limbs, everything to your fingertips, you have to be fully aware of posture and position and motion. your body is your medium-- not your face, not your clothes. there's almost an element of dance to it. the abstract form provides greater room for interpretation, not to mention shadows and reflections are symbolic on their own.
